Second Wind

Are you tired? Sluggish? Fatigued?

If so, you’re not alone. If you could look into a typical American workplace at any point during the day, it’s a safe bet that you would see people who are practically sleepwalking through their day. Is it because Americans work more hours than anyone else on the planet? Maybe. But when looking within that same typical American workplace you’d also probably also see individuals who work long and hard every day, yet never run out of gas. They are just energized at the morning meeting as they are when they get a rush project at the end of the day. What’s their secret? Unfortunately, there’s no magic potion. Just the same tried and true advice your doctor has been pushing for years.


Keep yourself in good physical condition, with exercise, and you’ll go through the entire day energized. The good news is that you don’t have to be an athlete or fitness fanatic, pushing yourself to the limit with grueling workouts. To get started, simply put one foot in front of the other and just…walk. If you’re out of shape, start slowly with a leisurely walk around the block and then gradually go farther and faster. Eventually, your stamina will increase and you might even start running, try a new workout like yoga or weight training, or even get a trainer. The point is, it takes very little to make you feel more energized.

Getting in shape is especially important for dentists. It’s an energy-intensive profession and, with the new dental economy pressuring many dentists to work 8–10 years longer than in the past, you need to build up better physical resources. Otherwise, the final years of your career as a dentist could be a time of fatigue and frustration.

Don’t let exhaustion hold you back. Start walking and get your second wind.
